This is a continuing project to document the historical development of transit maps. My focus is at first primarily on the New York City subway map. I am working on a multi-volume history of this subway map. The first volume, Vignelli: Transit Maps was published by RIT Press in December 2012; the second volume has been completed and is seeking a publisher; the other volumes are in preparation. See for further information on the Vignelli book, and online purchase.

This site contains tabulations of information on transit maps. Again, this focuses primarily on the NYC subway map. But I also include London as it is my home town.

Much of the information here is based on maps that I have collected, mostly through eBay. I would also like to thank the several map collectors who have shared their knowledge of, and enthusiasm for, the maps: Douwe de Haan, Simon Garfield, Ken Jones, Ken Morris, John Rofrano, Charlie Sokol, TJ (in chronological order of meeting them on eBay), and the many individuals in New York who have assisted this project, especially (alphabetically) Arline Bronzaft, Beatriz Cifuentes, Raleigh D'Adamo, Mike Hertz, John Tauranac, Massimo Vignelli (RIP), Yoshiki Waterhouse.
